Gyratory Works – Regular Update

Wednesday 1 July 2015
The subway at the junction of Watling Street and Chester Way in Northwich – opposite the Seafarer – will be closed to the public for up to six weeks. Work is scheduled to take up to ten weeks, but full-closure will not be applicable for the whole period.

23  September 2014
Works on the Gyratory will be fundamentally complete by Friday 26 September – the scheduled completion date – though there may be some small areas of ‘snagging’ to attend to thereafter.

Planning and re-instatement work in front of the newly-laid kerbs will take place week beginning 22 September to ensure a tidy finish to the works. This will necessitate lane closures, though the contractor has been instructed to ensure that two lanes are open on both Dane Street and Town Bridge, wherever possible.

11  September 2014
Weekend closures – the resurfacing works due to take place this coming weekend will require a full closure of the west-bound carriageway and a lane closure on the east-bound side between Leicester Street roundabout and Venables Road junctions.

This will be in force between 1800 hrs on Saturday 13th and 2000 hrs on Sunday 14th September. During the works, a diversion will be in place for traffic entering Northwich from Leicester Street roundabout which will run via Leicester Street and Venables Road.

Associated works are progressing well and continue on programme.  York stone flags, porphyry setts and granite paving are in the process of being laid at the Bull Ring.  Apple Market Street and large areas of the footways on the South Side of Watling Street have now been completed.  The equipment for the permanent signals is in the process of being installed and the traffic lights are currently programmed to be switched on next week.

Although some disruption is inevitable, we are monitoring traffic flows and doing all we can to help ease congestion.  Dane Street and Town Bridge will be opened up to two lanes whenever possible.

3  September 2014
Works are progressing and should be completed on programme. Push-button facilities have been added to the temporary traffic signals on Watling Street in an effort to aid pedestrians crossing.  We are doing all we can to balance traffic flows between Dane Street and Town Bridge, and continue to adjust timings in accordance with the lane closures that we have in place.  We will have Town Bridge and Dane Street opened up to two lanes whenever works permit, and are doing much of our works ‘off-peak’ in order to mitigate congestion.

Paving works on the south side of Town Bridge should be completed week beginning 1st September, with Dane Street/Watling Street and Apple Market Street to follow.  The public realm materials at the centre of the junction will continue to be laid and the granite setts and porphyry at the entrance to the High Street will soon follow.

Some disruption is inevitable, but we are continually monitoring traffic and will do all we can to help ease congestion.

20 August 2014
Works are progressing well & remain ahead of programme.  Temporary traffic signals are now in place on Bull Ring and safe uncontrolled crossing points have been established for pedestrians in lieu of the push button facilities.  This has enabled us to remove the old traffic signals kit and begin paving work in between Town Bridge and High Street.  We are now also better equipped to balance traffic flows between Dane Street and Town Bridge.

Works adjacent to Natwest continue with York Stone paving being grouted this week.  The new, permanent traffic signals and pedestrian crossing points at the ‘Crum Hill’ junction are now operational; the ‘Seafarer’ junction and new at-grade crossings are programmed to be switched on at the beginning of next week.

Although some disruption is inevitable, we are monitoring traffic flows and doing all we can to help ease congestion.

12 August 2014
Works continue ahead of programme.  Temporary traffic signals will be in place on the Bull Ring this week and safe uncontrolled crossing points will be established for pedestrians, in lieu of the push button facilities.  This will enable us to remove the old traffic signals kit and begin paving work in the area between Town Bridge and High Street.  We should also be better equipped to balance traffic flows between Dane Street and Town Bridge for the remainder of the works.

Works adjacent to Natwest continue with York Stone paving well underway and the  Apple Market Street widening is progressing well.

The new, permanet signals at  ‘Crum Hill’ are scheduled to be switched on this week, with the ‘Seafarer’ signals to follow.

Although some disruption is unavoidable, we continue to monitor traffic flows and do all we can to ease congestion.

4 August 2014
Works are progressing well and continue ahead of programme. Traffic management has been modified after assessment on site and signal timings have been adjusted to help ease congestion. We will look to introduce temporary traffic signals once a safe uncontrolled crossing point is established for pedestrians; this will better enable us to balance traffic flows between Dane Street and Town Bridge.

Works at The Bull Ring continue with kerbing well under way and York Stone paving having been started. Apple Market Street widening and site clearance is progressing well and the new, permanent signals at the ‘Crum Hill’ and ‘Seafarer’ junctions are scheduled to be switched on within the next couple of weeks.

Although some disruption is unavoidable, we continue to monitor traffic flows and do all we can to ease congestion.

28 July 2014
Resurfacing work at the Crum Hill and Seafarer junctions is now complete and road markings have been laid.  Traffic is back open to two lanes on each side of the carriageway.
Works continue at the Bull Ring with lane closures now in place for kerbing works.  Although some disruption is unavoidable, we are continually monitoring traffic flows and will do all we can to ease congestion.

24 July 2014
Resurfacing works are progressing well, with the vast majority of the Crum Hill and Seafarer junctions already completed.  New carriageway markings and traffic signal loops are to be cut this evening under road closures.  Signed diversion routes will be in place.

9 July 2014
The works are progressing well and are ahead of programme.  The temporary lights at the Seafarer and Crum Hill will remain while we complete the kerbing works and finish topping off the footways.  Manual control continues on site in order to help traffic flows.  Night time surfacing operations will be underway in the next couple of weeks and we will advertise these closer to the time.

1 July 2014
The works at Northwich Gyratory are progressing well and are ahead of programme.  We have installed temporary lights at the Seafarer earlier than planned as this has allowed us to manage the signals better and ensure that we can maintain our progress whilst allowing traffic to flow freely.

25 June 2014
Work has begun at the junction of Crum Hill and Chester Way to install new traffic signals. This phase of the works is anticipated to take approximately two weeks.  The traffic management is monitored in order to maintain the traffic flows but please allow extra time if you need to travel through here particularly at peak times.  In addition please avoid blocking the junctions at all times as this has a knock on effect.

12 June 2014
The final phases of construction work to create a permanent gyratory in Northwich begin on June 23.  See press release for further information.

All works are weather dependent.

2 April 2014
Last Sundays road closure works all went to plan, this Sunday (6th April) Castle Street resurfacing will be completed.  Diversions will be in place during the closure. Works as always will be weather dependant.

26 March 2014
As the contractors began to prepare Castle Street for resurfacing last Sunday (23rd March), the underlying road material was found to have deteriorated. Accompanied by the poor weather this led to the resurfacing not being able to be completed.

Castle Street will therefore be closed again on Sunday 30th March to improve the underlying road surface and make it good to prepare the road for resurfacing. This will be completed during a third road closure on Sunday 6th April along with the side roads. The remaining resurfacing of Chester Way will be completed during the fourth closure on Sunday 13th April.

All this work is still weather dependant. Diversion routes will be in place during each closure.

4 February 2014
Works continue between Chester Way and Freshwater View and will be moving down Castle Street, heading towards Town Bridge, from next Monday (10 Feb).  Parking in designated bays will need to be restricted whilst works are ongoing.  Every effort will be made to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.

Work began yesterday (Monday 6th) on the next junction in the gyratory works, Castle Street / Chester Way.  Currently there is only one lane available to turn both left and right onto Castle Street which is causing some delays.  Signals are manually controlled from 7am – 7pm to minimise the traffic queues.

18 December 2013
Work will begin on 6 January 2014 on the junction of Chester Way and Castle Street and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete.  Temporary traffic signals will be in operation for the majority of the works and these will be manually controlled at peak times.  The carriageway resurfacing will, like junction 1, take place under evening closures and dates for these will be advertised nearer the time.
